Surabaya, then straight up.
Lunch in Surabaya on 1 May, then the drive up into the Bromo area that same afternoon. The wedding filled 2 May. On 3 May we came back down to Surabaya for the flight to Jakarta.
Indonesia / 1–3 May 2026
Three days in East Java for a wedding, not for sightseeing. Surabaya for lunch, up the mountain the same afternoon, the ceremony on the second morning, and home on the third. The scenery was real, but it was never the reason.

Dressing up, standing around in formal clothes, eating together, and a mountain sitting in the background of every photo. If you come here for landscapes you will be slightly disappointed. We didn’t.
1 May 2026 / Surabaya → Bromo
The trip started properly at a table in Surabaya. Depot Bu Rudy is the kind of place you eat at before you go anywhere else in East Java — not a discovery, not a secret, just the correct first meal. We ate, and then we got in the car and went up.
The road to Bromo does the thing mountain roads do: the temperature drops, the turns get tighter, and everyone stops talking somewhere in the middle. By evening the sky over the mountains had gone gold, low cloud sitting in the valleys. That was the first moment the weekend felt like anything other than logistics.
Eat in Surabaya before you drive up. There is very little waiting for you at the top after dark.
2 May 2026 / Plataran Bromo
The holy matrimony was in the morning. It was cloudy — the kind of soft grey that photographs better than sun does — and the whole thing ran smoothly from start to finish, which at a wedding is the highest compliment available.
Plataran Bromo is the reason the photos look the way they do. The venue’s own view out toward the mountains is the best one we saw all weekend, better than anything we got from the road, and it sits right behind the ceremony without anyone having to arrange it.
The reception ran into the night, outdoors, under warm lighting that did more for the mood than any amount of decoration would have. And then they brought out a birthday cake for me, which nobody had warned me about. I was there for my brother’s wedding and somehow left the evening having been sung to. That is the part I actually remember.
Six photos of people in good clothes being slightly emotional. This is what the trip was for; the mountain was set dressing.
3 May 2026 / Back to Surabaya
The last morning had the flatness that follows a good wedding — everyone tired, nothing scheduled, the road quietly returning us to normal life. I have honestly forgotten how long the drive took, which tells you something about how much attention it held.
The mountain views from the car are pleasant and no more than that. If you are picturing the Bromo photographs you have seen online, this is not where they come from. The view worth planning around was the one at the venue, standing still, the day before.
Nice. Not remarkable. I would rather be honest about that than sell you a car window.
One room slept four of us: a loft with a mezzanine and a second bed upstairs, which worked far better than splitting rooms would have. It is a recent build and the facilities are not all finished yet, so go in expecting a hotel still growing into itself. We still had a good stay.
Depot Bu Rudy before the drive, not after. The climb takes the rest of the afternoon and your options thin out considerably once you are up the mountain.
The drive is scenic in an ordinary way. If Bromo scenery is what you want, the view from Plataran Bromo is the one that earns the trip — and you get it by standing still rather than by driving anywhere.
